A little belated.
So, although I am happy to report that I am so-far-so-good on my goal to bake a loaf every week, I do feel a little sad that this blog has just become a sort of check-in to see if I’ve been doing my homework. (Although let me tell you: I have been aceing this week’s homework, especially with strawberry-rhubarb jam. I baked it on Saturday, and three quarters of that loaf are gone.)
Anyway, in order to stop me from feeling like my blog is all (bread) business, I figured I’d pause first for a little look at what it is our resident princesses get up to when they think no one’s looking:
It’s anyone’s guess as to what they’re whispering about back there. I suspect they’re hiding from Starfish and trying to come up with camouflage tactics. Lately when she sees either of the kittens, she’ll squawk with delight, and start speed-crawling (thunderously) toward them, while occasionally reaching out one tiny hand. Both cats try to avoid her (they are quite nimble) but occasionally do fall prey to her (admittedly over-enthusiastic) petting, before managing to escape.
It’s a hard life for the pets in our house.
(This statement is not entirely sarcastic. Our poor Smelly has been tormented more often than usual the past few weeks by the smell of delicious, buttery toast that his insensitive humans refuse to share with him. Sheer selfishness. The poor thing is very good about not resenting us but… he does occasionally sulk on his cushion with a very martyred look about him.)
Getting back on topic here, I did, in fact, bake my planned bread this week: the Sunflower Oat Wheat Bread. Not only did it turn out every bit as fluffy and delightful as the French bread, but this loaf…
- Has Stuff in! (Though I think it could do with more oats.)
- Stayed moist longer than 45 minutes! (See also: oats.)
- Is 66% whole wheat. I could probably play with pushing that up a bit… but I’d rather leave it as is and just add more “inclusions”.
My only negative comment about this bread is that I found it too sweet. I would drop down to maybe 1.5tbsp of honey in future loaves. Will there be future loaves? Heck yes. Stay tuned (uh, in the long-term sense of the phrase) for a version with a little less honey and a little more oat.
