Well, I’ve been on quite the little vacation, haven’t I! I’ve actually developed a mini-backlog of things I want to post about, but have been trapped in a ditch of No Energy to actually write about them. (Most of this is due to the insane pile of pictures I need to tidy and upload to Flickr. Will I finally get it done? Time will tell.) Still, with Week 14’s delivery imminent (tonight!), I figure I should at least catch all y’all up veggie-wise.
So… Week 12. Week 12 was the most mysterious of the CSA shipments (thus FAR!) because I was in Vegas and The Boy was… not particularly knowledgeable in telling me what it contained. Happily Chris took a picture for me, so I can share (thanks Chris and Boj!):
Based on the picture, we had… tomatoes!, yellow zucchini, green beans, basil (which I can only assume is what The Boy was referring to when he stated that the box this week had “something smelly; like really smelly”), carrots, radishes, scallions, potatoes and… lettuce? cabbage? Not entirely sure on that one. He had also cut the radish greens off and stuffed them into the veggie drawer which confused me greatly. When I’d probed to find out what they had belonged to, he’d had no idea. I tried them… once. Not recommended.
Aside from my radish green issues (imagine! a green I like less than beet greens!), we made pretty good use of most of the rest — I do love the hearty, really “fruit”-y harvests of late summer, although I am sad to report that I did not get to the basil before it had been stuffed in the fridge (naked!) and developed those sad dark spots on the leaves.
The following week I was not only in town, but I got to pick up the shipment myself! When I got to the farm, Heather (one of the co-op student farm hands) pointed out that they were also selling additional tomatoes at $4/quart. I felt I was quite restrained in only buying two quarts. The Boy’s reaction when he got home tells me I might be wrong in this regard. Given that my reckless purchase (ha!) only made 2 and a half pints of sauce, however, I maintain that I should have bought more. Anyhow!
Week 13 brought with it plenty of glorious tomatoes (never thought I’d see myself type that out!), wax beans, parsley, sweet peppers, radishes, potatoes, and cute young onions.
I do miss the cukes and carrots of earlier weeks (they are a favourite snacking staple in our house), our own garden is still producing (cutely spherical) cucumbers and I’ve been pulling up a couple of our (still finger-slim) carrots every now and then for The Boy.
Again, fitting all the veggies we’ve been getting lately into meals hasn’t been tough at all. This week saw some potato-radish latkes, and an entire pan of horribly over-grilled vegetables (literal burnt offerings) that I nearly cried over. (It’s what happens when I get distracted while bbq-ing, I suppose. I felt horrible, but The Boy was very nice about it.) I’m wondering a little if there’ll be many winter squashes in the weeks to come, as those I tend to run into difficulties with (aside from some roasting or maybe soup-making, what can you really do with a winter squash?!). I am simultaneously (somewhat perversely) looking forward to it in order to see what I do come up with.
I feel that our shares are growing ever so slightly smaller these weeks, but mostly because what we’re getting is so much denser; a bag of mesclun, after all, hardly compares to a bag of tomatoes!
