Ah, another week in vegetables. Although I’m a little sad to see this week’s veggies (especially since I’ll be gone for most of the week), I was actually more upset to see what’s on sale in the flyers — Concord grapes and roma tomatoes?! Why is the universe taunting me? Two things I want to can and I can’t because I’ll be away! Argh.
As I was walking up the path, I ran into another CSA member leaving. He took a look at my grocery bag and said “You’re going to need a bigger bag than that! I think this is the biggest one yet!!” Well, he underestimated the size of my bag (although I admit it was close) and I have to agree: the shares keep getting bigger!
This week we had… zucchini, cucumber, lemon cucumber, a tomato, sweet peppers, potatoes, wax beans (a boon for The Boy — and he doesn’t have to share them!), more beautiful, stripey beets (with plentiful greens!), radishes (!), scallions, and another rainbow of quite-big carrots.
I have to say that I shamefully consumed half the zucchini before we even split the share. In a fit of hungriness (and also in the face of a dearth of veggies), I made this which, while tasty, seemed to kind of undo all the virtuous “I’m eating summer squash!” lightness that you’d normally get from eating it.
For the lemon cucumber, one of the farm folk had informed me it was “much sweeter” than normal cucumbers. It might be much sweeter than their cucumbers (which have tended to be a titch on the bitter side), but I found it only a little sweeter than the cukes I’ve been growing at home. (The Boy, our local cucumber expert, agrees.)
The week will be an interesting one: The Boy is left to his own devices as I’m out of town for the week. I did give him strict orders to eat the wax beans (which shouldn’t be hard, since he loves them). The Saturday before I left, I also cooked up most of our radishes, the beets and some of the larger carrots as bbq roasties, as well as frying up some of the beet greens (borrowing Nigel’s bacon-garlic-chili flake trifecta; delicious). For the rest, I hope they’ll keep well enough for my return. If not… well, that’ll be a bit sad, but nothing dramatic.
Speaking of dramatic… in the interest of honesty (and what, after all, is the point of keeping an online diary if one is not to be honest?) I have the following two things to state:
- It appears that the Harvest Gods are against me as they have chosen this week — this week! when I am gone! — for grocers to have the very things I wish to can on ludicrous sales. (Namely: corn and sweet peppers for corn relish, roma tomatoes (duh), and Concord grapes for jelly.)
- I’m either trying to spite them, or have lost my mind, as Saturday morning I set out for the shops ostensibly to buy bourbon (to make this bbq sauce which, do you have an hour? And also some bourbon? Then you should make it. Yes, right now. It is that good.) and came home with the bourbon, along with a dozen ears of corn and half a bushel (yes, you read that right) of red shepherd peppers.
