So tonight was (I suppose) a long overdue first: my first ever rainy BBQ experience. Thanks to a fairly deep eave over our house, I actually stayed mostly dry; the grilling was really only an adventure when the occasional large drop would plunge chillingly down my back. Given that recently my rain barrel has run dry more times than I want to consider, you’ll definitely not catch me complaining about some much-needed precipitation. In spite of the occasional shriek-inducing drips, however, the meal was well worth it. What did we have?
- Back bacon “steaks”. This is already a good start. Frankly, there are very few forms of pork that I don’t love anyway, but bacon (both streaky and back) are definite favourites.
Grilled (stripey!) beets. I sliced these probably between 1/4 and 1/8 of an inch thick, generously oiled and salted, then used them to christen our new BBQ grilling basket widget. Aside from being beautiful (and, um, slightly charred), they were amazing: sweet, with that delicious, full roasted flavour, chewy and tangy all at the same time. The Boy expressed both surprise and delight — I’ve found a new way to cook summer beets!
Steamed broccoli. I know, I know: mehn. The cooking method itself wasn’t revelatory, but the flavour of the broccoli sure was. For the first time, broccoli that really tasted like something!
Grilled fresh, sweet, lucious, local corn. I don’t know what else I can add. If you live in the area, now is the time — go get some corn!
But what would dinner be without music? Naturally, I felt the need to burst into (horribly recast) song:
I’m grilling in the rain, just grilling in the rain.
What a glorious feeling — I’m happy again!
I’m laughing at clouds, so dark up above,
The sun’s in my heart, and I’m ready for grub!
…okay, sorry about that. I needed to get it out of my system. There was some sad news to the evening: the zucchini, which I had also intended on grilling, had apparently turned to mush in the fridge. Cutting open the remaining firm bit, the zuke appeared to be rotting from the inside out. Guess I chose a, erh, lemon, as it were. Still, I’m sure we’ll be getting plenty of zucchini in the following weeks for me to grill — and if not zukes than other summer squash! I am super-excited for this week’s veggie share; reading the email, we are getting not only a sizeable delivery of veggies, but the contents themselves are quite exciting! Details and photos to come!
