Hello again — you missed my wordiness, right? No? Well, I’m back anyway. I feel kind of silly that I completely forgot to take pictures of anything on Monday (which was part of the long weekend, after all!) but it was still an awesome day: The Boy and I spent it hanging out with Ebo — the only ob/gyn I know! — before she headed back out to Saskatchewan. All in, it was a pretty low-key day; hopefully she wasn’t bored. It was definitely wonderful to have all that time to laze around and chit-chat though.
Okay, onto the food! This week’s delivery was small, according to Farmer Gord, due the fact that until yesterday, we’d gone a month with no rain. That may be, but due to one particular vegetable in the shipment, I know The Boy had no complaints (he actually thought it was a pretty good haul):
Napa cabbage, turnips, mesclun mix, beet greens (…) and… carrots! The Boy and I ate a couple immediately after I took the picture. There were some choices offered me — napa vs arugula, and mesclun vs chard, but to be honest, I wish, wish, wish I’d asked if I could have had the napa and the arugula but neither the mesclun nor chard. Ah well, next time I’ll think to ask. At least this week I didn’t make the mistake of not choosing the napa, and thus earning The Boy’s ire.
“You turned down bok choi?!”
“It’s not bok choi! It’s napa cabbage!”
“It tastes like bok choi!”
So, the carrots (along with some of last week’s cucumbers that we’re still eating our way through) will likely vanish as snack food before the weekend hits. I seem to have hit a reasonable salad formula of “mesclun+beet greens+red onion+something with flavour” so that’ll be taken care of in a few salads. I have to admit, however, that I’m torn on the topic of the turnips. On the one hand, the latkes worked out really well — The Boy was disappointed we were out of turnip. On the other… I kind of feel like I should maybe broaden my horizons and try something new, too? Like maybe this? (Come on — they’re tantalizing!) Votes?
Aside from that, here’s some ideas for the coming week’s menu…
Beef and broccoli, braised napa-cum-bok choi, rice (in the form of congee)
Pasta, garlic challah rolls (I had some left over!), Formula salad (with red pepper)
Roast pork loin, roasties Sausage, Something With Turnip (rösti), fried brussels sprouts broccoli, braised heart of napa (not bitter)
Stuffed peppers (with as many shredded beet greens as I can cram in), more Formula salad (possibly with nuts in) sautéed turnip greens and (bitter, as it had bolted) napa
Pan-fried Cedar-planked fish (salmon), risotto hobo potatoes, sauteed turnip greens and whatever other veg is left, pan-fried brussels and formula salad
Now you might ask where all these “other” veggies are coming from. Broccoli? Brussels sprouts? Peppers? Didn’t I figure out that I should stop veggie shopping now? Yes, yes I did. But I bought the broccoli to make the salad for last weekend’s bbq, and had some left over. Also, while shopping, The Boy looked so piteously at me whilst holding a bag of reject bok choi (and brussels) that I couldn’t not buy them. Etc. So we have a little extra on hand.
Late edit: Apparently this week kind of threw a wrench in my intended meals. I know I usually change things up a bit, but this week it seems nothing went as planned.
