Well, of a sorts.
If we remember back when I misguidedly threw down the gauntlet right before launching into my two-times-a-week paddling practice schedule, I had declared that I would…
a) Run a 5k race on Sunday, June the 14th, and
b) Motivate Bok to get his ass into gear, running-wise, so he would run a fall marathon.
Well, my intentions were good.
I completely dropped out of running in May due to the paddling, and in the week before the race, realized that I should maybe do some running to prepare? Needless to say, it was neither pretty, nor encouraging. I think I made it 2k before having to walk, wheezing, for a couple blocks.
In spite of this, I had still readied myself to sally on come race day (painful and slow though it would doubtless be) but happily my girls rescued me by throwing my awesome stagette on the Saturday night!
(I plan on doing a much better write-up of the occasion when I’ve got some time to pull my thoughts together. And possibly I’m stalling because I’m hoping my sister will get (some of) the pictures off her camera. Or something. For now, I will merely say that my shoulders are still sore.)
Anyhow, so I had a fantastic excuse not to run the race, and although I woke up early enough for it, I didn’t go. I elected instead to have a brunch of Boy-made crepes with Chan and Linlin, who drove up from the tropics for the occasion. (Aside: Thank you so much for coming up! And I’m sorry I left my shoes in your car!)
Surprisingly, Bok seemed to feel that this was a more than adequate excuse for my absence, but I suspect he was preoccupied by his disappointment with his own running time. He is inspired to do better, and in fact was trying to get me to run a Canada Day race (to which I say Dude, No More Races Before The Wedding), but happily agreed when I offered to sign him up for a half-marathon in September. (I will be running a paltry 5k, although I am eyeing a 10k in October.)
Technically, I guess I didn’t achieve either of the things I’d said I would. I count it a victory nonetheless, however, because I did achieve the spirit of the thing. We’ll see in the fall how far this new burst of running zeal lasts!
